IFTA deadlines 2026: every date, and what actually happens if you miss one

If you run one truck across state lines, four dates a year decide whether this is a twenty-minute job or a letter from your base jurisdiction. Here they are, with the arithmetic behind the penalty.

The short version
  • Returns are due 30 April, 31 July, 31 October and 31 January — the month after each quarter ends. When the date lands on a weekend or holiday it moves to the next business day.
  • File even if you didn't run. A zero return costs nothing; a missing return is what suspends licences.
  • Late penalty in most jurisdictions is $50 or 10% of the tax due, whichever is greater, plus interest per jurisdiction per month.
  • Keep your records four years. If you're audited, that's the window they can ask about.

The four dates for 2026

IFTA runs on calendar quarters, and the return is due the last day of the month after the quarter closes. In 2026 that gives you:

QuarterCoversDue
Q1January–March30 April 2026
Q2April–June31 July 2026
Q3July–September2 November 2026
Q4October–December1 February 2027

How the penalty is actually calculated

The headline number is the easy part: $50, or 10% of the tax due, whichever is larger. What catches people is the interest, because it isn't charged on your net total — it's charged per jurisdiction, per month, on the amount owed to each one. A return where you owe four states a little and get credit back from two can still accrue interest on the four while the credits sit there doing nothing for you.

That's why filing late with money owed is worse than it looks on the summary line, and why filing on time with an imperfect number and amending later is usually the cheaper mistake.

Why a zero return still matters

If the truck sat all quarter, you still file. It takes two minutes and it keeps your licence clean. Jurisdictions don't chase you for the tax on a quarter you didn't run — they chase you for the missing paperwork, and a pattern of missing returns is the fastest route to a revoked licence and a truck that can't legally cross a state line.

Common questions
What if the deadline is a Saturday?

It moves to the next business day. That's why Q3 2026 is due 2 November and not 31 October.

Can I file early?

As soon as the quarter closes, yes. Most operators file in the first week and forget about it.

I found an error after filing. Now what?

You amend. Every jurisdiction has a process for it, and correcting yourself is treated very differently from being caught in an audit.
